TT label-head Jon 7 goes through occasional creative high cycles during one of which the tracks on "Science Fiction" were created. While searching for a unifying theme he turned to new inspirations that his schooling provided and went with the science fiction short stories he liked so well (soviet especially) and the new aesthetic experiments in op-art he took a strong liking to that week. The tracks themselves fit the space story theme well, electronic ambiences and dissonances that...

For Complex Silence 4, mysterybear (Dave Seidel) provides a decidedly abstract, yet sublime exploration of the Golden Ratio with two long-form tracks. He describes the creative process: "Both tracks use intervals and waveforms derived from the Golden Ratio. I usually compose in just intonation, which is based on rational numbers (whole number ratios). The golden ratio, by contrast, is an irrational number. Intervals based on irrational numbers are more complex and less consonant than pure...

As a result of the restructuring of the Jon7.net Microlabel catalogue, another gem from the not-too-distant past has been transferred to Time Theory. With a wink and a chuckle, Carpenter John (a moniker based on Jon 7's occasional profession) presents a gentle in-joke amongst his netlabel friends. Despite its play on words, "Variable" is a nice piece of music in its own right. The emphasis is more ambient pads, and there's a clean, open sound to it, and while it floats long like a drone piece there are evolving melodies throughout it. Interestingly, there aren't any plans to make "Variable" a series, it was just an...

Jon 7, once again thinly veiled by his initials (JMMIII) was turning to Wikipedia and the periodic table for inspiration when he stumbled across an entry on crystal field theory, and the lightbulb switched on. The tracks reflect an attempt to think molecularly, and though no actually understanding of crystal field theory can be claimed, the tracks still convey a pretty good sense of what the view might be like on an atomic level. It has been expressed on many occasions that TT releases have a bit of a science-fiction bent, and we like our sci-fi heavy on the science. Enter Sunmoon with "Protostar" and you have a mystical, cosmic ambient masterpiece. The sounds are much like the swirling of gasses and matter as a star is formed or destroyed. "Clockwork" is Jon 7's tribute to a Mystified piece of the same name, which he liked very much when it came out on the Treetrunk netlabel. This "Clockwork" is in three parts each making different use of different sets of clock sounds. The results range from soothing to crushing. (The following description was written by the author of this release.) Tijdgeest is the Dutch word for "in the spirit of time" but one can also translate it more literally to "spirit of time" (note the small but significant difference) or "ghost of time". It is the latter that strikes every 30 seconds. Why? It is said that a human brain needs 7 seconds to properly register and remember a sound or array of sounds. As they described it, these tracks are some of the only survivors of an extensive period of recording. As usual, the evocative titles tell a story of times and places both existent and non-existent. Many of Jon 7's ideas come from things seen in dreams, and "Towers" is a prime example. In the dream this album's concept came from, Jon 7 was walking through an old house where he found a large map indicating the presence of two large towers, towers that didn't actually exist but were indicative of two equipment set-ups that were referred to as the 'blue tower' and the 'red tower'. Multi-instrumentalist Andreas Niegl (Given Willingly) provides Timetheory with another splendid album, this one exploring more noise and soundscape territory. The cinematic approach continues from the last album, and screens a different sort of movie than before, in this one, the scenes are more graphic and explicit, like the inner thoughts of a Burroughs-read, elegant loner amidst modern society. Andreas' music should be enjoyed more like a book or movie is enjoyed. This release is a natural...

Julien Skrobek's sounds were referred to Timetheory by a netlabel friend, and we were at once pleased and intrigued by what we received. The music of "Plage Concrete" marks our first venture into this style, and it's a welcome addition. Acoustic guitar, field recordings, AM and shortwave radio and other elements come together to create a sparse but ever-changing soundscape that grabs only as much attention as needed, then slips into the background. Like much music in the 'concrete'...

When Jon 7 first met Andreas Niegl (Given Willingly) online, the first project they discussed was a split release, and in fittingly contrary style, it was the last of the GW albums to be released. However Jon and Andreas are proud to present you with this split, or perhaps it could better be described as a double feature. "As the Oceans Break Asunder" is somewhat fantastical sound story, telling of sea-monsters in a way that resembles some modernized Viking tale. The tracks are full...

Ruins Winter is an noise project from Argentina, but "Burning Flame" is not your average noise. Instead of the merely brutish scraping noise that exists, this noise is more like volcanic eruption, crossed signals and waveform disruption. It's a very nice listen, something just barely controlled about it's other wise careening feedback and tones. For music that has no normal need for restraint, that quality is used in just the right places to make this recording hypnotic while still...

Mystified contacted TTHQ recently with a new piece called "Pulsar Drone Sequence" on the same day Jon 7 had just finished something new himself. Since for both artists, these new pieces were the first either had done that included the use of beats, it was natural for them to fit together into this release. For those who have followed Mystified's music, you are aware that beats and rhythms have not been a major part of his creations since the days of "Cardboard Hotel". Jon 7...

What is 'sprimmer'? Spring? Summer? A Dutch euphemistic term? This time of year it doesn't matter, the sun is shining, flowers are growing, and in keeping, Timetheory artists and associated creative characters have provided these 17 tracks commemorating the dark and noisy aspects of spring. These 17 artists' tracks span from subtle ambient to drum-and-bass and evil techno. Daffodils and roses it's not, but in this spring garden there are colors and tasty sonic morsels in abundance. Compilations...

Light, ever the symbol of that which is good and wholesome; purveying, with stalwart benevolence, a sense of comfort, familiarity and serenity, twists upon itself revealing unforeseen depths of perversion and depravity when filtered through the tainted stain of glass. Controlled Dissonance is John Ingram (the musician, not to be confused with the Jesuit martyr or the CEO of Ingram Industries), and the moniker aptly describes the musical approach of “Glass Tainted Stain”. Although the...

Now here's a quirky item in the TT catalogue. Krakenti, an artist from Latvia sent us this album of slow-growing ambient IDM. Each track inches its way along, building and mutating in lazy cycles. The beginnings of these tracks are often in no way indicative of how they will end, which we feel is a very good thing. Elements come in and out of the music in a simplistic way that lets everything be heard pass by pass. These pieces are a lot like caterpillars themselves, and as we know not all...

It's been a while since we got anything from Tom and Holly of Turmoil, who have been busy running the well-liked Amduscias netlabel. They recently released Jon 7's album "The Dark Moon", so in return we released this album, "The Black Suns". Turmoil albums are usually pretty good anyway, and each album they release further defines their sound. In our minds, it's very much like what new-age music could be if it were not so preoccupied with lightness. "Suns in...

This second Time Theory release from President Blair explores his style of noise in a different manner than usual. the sounds on this release are (untypically for music in the noise genre) entirely digital in source and construction. No tapes were harmed in the making of this recording. It was however recorded in one take using a variety of small apps running at once. Future PB recordings wil likely oscillate between this digital style and the previous lo-fidelity tape-manipulated style.

The second Timetheory series of recordings, "Theory", begins with this release by the humble and anonymous Simple Painter, who besides being a representative of the Simple Painting Company, is a firm believer in the notion that things should never be too complicated. With sounds rescued and recycled from the hard drives of others, and through use of simple painting techniques, Simple Painter has created these 5 tracks, each one named after an intriguing but nonexistent theory. In...

The latest entry to the "Time" series comes from Upheaval, who reinterprets the theme in a darker and more earthbound direction than the previous "Time" releases. "25 To Life" is the title of the track, and Upheaval's signature dark sound effectively conveys the sound of isolation and bleak loneliness as well as the crushing weight of the burden of time itself. This is a short release, only thirteen minutes, but you're encouraged to allow it to feel like an...

Alexander Jannink (aka Vanilla Sandro) has been one of Jon 7's strongest allies for several years, and after a few successful collaborations and releases on Jon7.net Microlabel, Alex told Jon 7 he was working on an ambitious full-length album entitled "Nachtkind". The album's construction took over a year, went through several track lineup changes, and then took almost another year to be mastered and delivered. That's how it is sometimes in the netlabel world, usually known for its...
